Should Winter Olympians be using
social media for climate action?
Forget the long, drawn-out broadcasts your parents watched; the Winter Olympics is all about the authenticity, the extreme sports, and the viral moments you catch on TikTok and Instagram.

The Games create an experience that we can share. Social media drives real-time excitement and gives everyone something to talk about. It enables us to connect with athletes through their personal journeys, their training struggles and their values. We get to see not just the creativity and skill of snowboarding, the speed of skeleton, or the chaos of short-track speed skating but the buildup to The Games itself. A key question this year with the forecast of a warm winter is, will the venues be ready in time? More importantly, do the competitors feel that climate change poses a significant threat to future Winter Olympics? When American Snowboarder Chloe Kim uses her platform to talk about climate change and shares her personal views, does this influence the way we think about the topic? Does it change our mindset as we hear firsthand and see for ourselves how environmental collapse is forcing us to consider not only changing the format of the Winter Olympics but highlighting this global issue.
